Working across the Euroforest Group, the three-year Professional Forestry Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6) offers a unique blend of on-the-job training and academic study, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to become a successful Forest Manager.
The Forestry Degree Apprenticeship is in partnership with the University of Cumbria and the Forestry Commission. After successfully completing the apprenticeship, the candidate will gain a BSc (Hons) as a Professional Forester and be able to apply for membership of the ICF.
During the apprenticeship, apprentices will learn about and become competent in the broad spectrum of forestry through assisting with, and later having responsibility for, the planning, creation, management, harvesting and utilisation of woodlands and forests. Apprentices will split their time between Euroforest Timber Marketing and Euroforest Silviculture.
Harvesting:
· Assist with providing high-quality service, sourcing supplies of timber from clients and woodland owners and delivering it to industrial and domestic end users and processors.
· Build a sound understanding of timber markets and product specifications in specific geographical areas.
· Learn about how to manage seasonal demand and fluctuation in market values and trends.
· Learn about how to engage contractors for harvesting and associated work, setting rates and ensuring compliance with company safety standards, environmental constraints, and contract procedures inline with FISA and industry guidelines.
· Assist in conducting regular and thorough site visits to manage progress of harvesting work, evaluating appropriateness of machinery, quality of timber, optimising timber cut, review of forest roads /timber stacks /relevant haulage, and all aspects of Health and Safety.
· Monitor application of HSE, FISA and ISO 45001 standards on site visits and promote good practice.
· Ensure compliance with ISO 14001 standards, to ensure preservation of environmental features within the management of harvesting operations.
· Ensure compliance with the FSC and FSC Chain of Custody Certification standards.
· Assist and cooperate with the compliance team and certification bodies during internal and external auditing of systems and sites.
· Undertake obligatory training i.e. First Aid and Health & Safety.
Forest Management:
· Assist the Forest Managers in the design and grant application process for new woodlands.
· Assist the Forest Managers in the preparation of Management Plans that outline the future management of the land and forests.
· Support Forest Managers in the planning and oversight of a range of forest activities, including complying with all environmental and health and safety regulations.
· Liaise with statutory and public consultees and landowners/clients.
· Prepare grant applications.
· Prepare and submit felling licence applications.
· Deliver restocking and new planting plans.
· Carry out beat-up surveys.
· Work alongside contractors planting trees.
· Order materials and deal with contractors.
· Excellent communication skills and ability to converse with a range of people.
· Ability to follow detailed procedures accurately.
· Passion and a desire to learn.
· Proficient IT skills.
· Full UK driving licence.
· The University of Cumbria specify the following minimum entry requirements:
o Maths and English at grade 4 or equivalent at Level 2.
o A levels or existing relevant Level 3 qualifications equivalent to96 UCAS points.
o Must have the right to live and work in the UK.
This role is a full-time, fixed term apprenticeship, Monday to Friday.
The successful candidate will be required to enrol on the Professional Forester Degree Programme (Level 6) with the University of Cumbria.
