Growing with Euroforest: James Baxter’s Journey to a Career in Professional Forestry

From harvesting operations to silviculture, James shares how Euroforest’s apprenticeship is helping him build a diverse and rewarding future in forestry.

At Euroforest, nurturing future talent is an important part of our commitment to the forestry sector. One of our current apprentices, James Baxter, is a shining example of what passion and dedication can achieve. James is currently completing a Professional Forestry Degree while gaining valuable hands-on experience across our operations. Here’s what he had to say about his journey so far:

Why I Applied for the Apprenticeship

Having already worked within Euroforest on the harvesting side after leaving school, I was making great progress learning new skills and gaining a deeper understanding of the industry. When I heard about the apprenticeship opportunity, I knew it would be a great chance to expand my knowledge, especially in areas of forestry I hadn’t yet explored.

What My Week Looks Like

When I was part of the harvesting team, my week involved visiting multiple sites across the Scottish Borders and Northumberland to monitor harvesting progress. I also supported machine operators with any issues and assisted managers with haulage data and invoicing. Since moving to the silviculture team, I now inspect new woodland creation sites and ongoing maintenance operations, depending on the season. I’ve also been involved in creating contracts and ensuring compliance.

Biggest Achievement (so far)

For me, the biggest achievement has been how much I’ve learned about the silviculture side of forestry. It was completely new to me when I started, but I’ve developed a strong understanding and am excited to keep learning more to enhance my future career.

Biggest challenge

Balancing academic work with on-the-job tasks was a challenge at first. There were times when one would take over the other, but I’ve learned how to manage my time better and give each the focus it needs.

Hopes for the future

I hope this apprenticeship equips me with a well-rounded knowledge of the many different roles within forestry. My goal is to continue building a career in the industry, working across a variety of areas to support and promote good forestry practices.
