Making Historic Greenwich Safer – Precision Tree Removal Near Ancient Monument

In the heart of one of London’s busiest boroughs, Euroforest was tasked with the delicate removal of eight large dead, dying, and dangerous trees. These trees posed a significant risk to public safety as they overhung roads, bus stops, footpaths, and most notably, an 18th-century Grade II-listed ice well, a rare and fragile historical monument.

Location: Greenwich, London

Duration: 3 Days

Team Leads: Planned by William Rolph, Managed by Sam Cole

Project Goals

The primary objective was to eliminate the immediate risk to the public while protecting vital infrastructure and a treasured piece of local heritage.

Site Challenges

Operating in a highly trafficked area of Greenwich presented unique logistical challenges:

  • A massive dead tree dangerously overhanging the ancient ice well.
  • Required the implementation of three-way traffic lights, bus stop suspension, and footpath closures to ensure safety and access.
  • High visibility in a densely populated urban environment demanded precision, minimal disruption, and efficient coordination.

Solutions & Innovation

Success hinged on excellent pre-planning and communication with the local council, which enabled smooth traffic and public coordination. Our team deployed the Green-Tec TH3, an advanced piece of machinery that made light work of the removal process, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and efficiency in arboricultural work.

Results & Recognition

  • 8 dangerous trees safely removed
  • Zero disruption to the ancient monument
  • The council praised the quality of work and our new technology, resulting in invitations to quote for further projects across Greenwich.

Reflecting Our Values

This project is a strong reflection of Euroforest’s core values. Our commitment to public safety was at the heart of the operation, ensuring dangerous trees were removed without risk to people or property. At the same time, we respected and protected the heritage of the site, working carefully around the 18th century ice well. The use of innovative equipment like the Green-Tec TH3 demonstrated our forward-thinking approach, while the successful coordination with local authorities highlighted our emphasis on strong collaboration and community engagement.

What’s Next?

Following the successful delivery of this high stakes project, we’ve been invited to quote for additional tree works in the Greenwich area, a testament to the trust and reputation our team continues to build.
